Youth of today represent the future generations who will use our cooperatives. Educating young people on the cooperative way of doing business is very important to the future growth and success of cooperatives.

Scholarship Program

The Nebraska Cooperative Council Education Foundation Scholarship Program in Honor of Michael S. Turner was implemented with the 1993/94 academic year.  Since that time, a total of 130 scholarships totaling $97,600 have been provided.   See the "Foundation" page on this website for more information about the scholarship program.

FFA Competition

The Nebraska Cooperative Council annually sponsors the Cooperative Speaking Competition for FFA members.  It provides an incentive for young people to learn more about the cooperative form of doing business; to develop speaking and communication skills; and to involve local cooperative representatives in the ag education process.

2010 Competition...The 2010 competition was held on April 8-9, 2010 in Lincoln.   Congratulations to Lauren Ibach of the Sumner-Eddyville-Miller FFA Chapter, who was the winner of the 2010 competition.  A news release on all the winners was forwarded statewide.

Understanding Cooperatives

An updated version of a teaching curriculum on cooperatives was distributed to all agricultural education instructors in high schools and key agricultural educators in post-secondary institutions in Nebraska in June 2009.  The curriculum utilized was the revised edition of Understanding Cooperatives, originally developed in 1990 by the Rural Business-Cooperative Services (RBCS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).  This updated version replaces the existing curriculum by the same title which the Council provided to all agricultural educators in the state in 1994 and 1999.  Understanding Cooperatives is the most complete resource about cooperatives ever offered for educational purposes.  The updated version contains an instructor's guide with the eight lesson plan units; all teacher and student references; PowerPoint presentations and testing materials; and educational games.  The original curriculum was customized by incorporating a lesson plan unit on all types of Nebraska cooperatives and their impact on the local economy.  This material was also revised and distributed with the updated curriculum.  All this material is contained on two CDs making this very user-friendly for instructors.

In the fall of 2009, the Council also provide an 11-minute "Cooperatives 101" video.  This video was provided to all high school and post secondary ag instructors.  This video provides a basic explanation of how cooperatives function.  Click here to view "Cooperatives 101."

If you have any questions, please contact Ed Woeppel.

Information on Cooperatives
